About this port

The medieval town of Civitavecchia was razed by WWII bombing, but it’s worth seeing Fort Michelangelo, a 15th century museum that offers great views over the busy port, Riva di Traiano, where ferries depart for Sardinia.

The train station is about a 400m walk from Riva di Traiano and the town offers quaint shops and streets, a cathedral, local market, and waterfront amusement park. There’s a sulphurous hot spring, La Finconcella, in use since ancient Roman times and you can visit the ruins of the nearby Terme Taurine archaeological site.

The Madonna of Civitavecchia in the church of Sant' Agostino is a site of pilgrimage for devout Catholics around Italy, while the National Archaeological Museum in Civitavecchia's historic center displays Roman artifacts including a Roman copy of the portrait of Socrates and a statue of Apollo.
